What We Buy

Every Datejust, Every Era

Early & Proto-Era Datejust
REFS. 6305 · 6604 · 6605 · 4467  ·  1950–1959
The first Datejusts — the 6305 of 1953 was one of Rolex's earliest attempts at an automatic date mechanism; the 6604 and 6605 refined the case and cyclops lens. Gilt dials, acrylic crystals, early Cal. 1065 and 1055. Extremely collectible as the genesis of the modern Datejust.
4-Digit Vintage Era
REFS. 1600 · 1601 · 1603 · 1630  ·  1959–1977
The definitive vintage Datejust generation. Smooth, fluted, and engine-turned bezels; gilt and matte dials; chapter rings; acrylic crystal; Cal. 1570 and 1575. Tropical dials from this era — browned, caramelized, or two-tone — are among the most sought-after Rolex dials in collecting. Full matching Jubilee bracelet adds significant value.
Turn-O-Graph “Thunderbird”
REFS. 6309 · 6309 · 16253 · 116264  ·  1954–2011
The rotatable bezel Datejust — the Turn-O-Graph predated the Submariner's rotating bezel. Named "Thunderbird" after the USAF aerobatic team. The early 4-digit references in steel, gold, and two-tone are especially collectible; the 5-digit 16253 and 6-digit 116264 carry the same rotating-bezel distinction. One of the most underrated vintage Rolex categories.
5-Digit Era — 16200 Series
REFS. 16200 · 16220 · 16234 · 16233 · 16238  ·  1977–2009
Sapphire crystal arrives, quickset date mechanism introduced. The 16200 in steel with Jubilee bracelet is the archetypal modern Datejust. Gold and two-tone references (16238, 16233) from this era are consistently strong. Special edition dials — wood, stone, tropical-aged examples — command premiums. Box and papers from this era materially affect value.
Datejust II & 41mm
REFS. 116300 · 116334 · 126300 · 126334  ·  2009–present
The 41mm Datejust — first as the Datejust II (116300), then redesigned as the current Datejust 41 (126300). Larger case, Oyster bracelet standard, wider dial options. Steel, white gold, Everose, and two-tone configurations. Chocolate, black, and slate dials are particularly strong in the secondary market. Current references purchased at full market rates.
Precious Metal & Gem-Set
18K YELLOW · WHITE · EVEROSE GOLD · PLATINUM · DIAMOND BEZEL
Solid gold Datejusts in yellow, white, and Everose gold across all eras. Diamond-set bezels, factory-set dial configurations, and full pavé references. The Datejust's long production history means gold references span from the 1601 through the current 126238. We purchase all precious metal configurations at strong secondary market rates.
Two-Tone Rolesor
REFS. 1603 · 16013 · 16233 · 116203 · 126203  ·  ALL ERAS
The steel-and-gold Datejust is one of the most iconic watch configurations ever produced. Yellow gold and steel, Everose and steel combinations spanning every generation. The two-tone Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet is a defining luxury aesthetic. Vintage two-tone references with original matching bracelets — intact and unpolished — carry significant premiums.
Ladies' & Midsize
26MM · 28MM · 31MM  ·  DATEJUST LADY 28 · PEARLMASTER
The Ladies' Datejust in 26mm and 28mm, the midsize 31mm, and the Pearlmaster variants. Diamond bezels, gem-set dials, and precious metal configurations are the rule rather than the exception at the top of this range. The current Lady-Datejust 28 in gold with diamond bezel is among Rolex's strongest performers in the women's category.

Collector Terminology

Datejust Nicknames & Variants

The Datejust collector community uses specific terminology for the most desirable dial and configuration variants. Knowing which type you own determines the offer.

TR
Tropical Dial
Various vintage refs — 4-digit era (1959–1977)
A dial that has chemically aged from its original color — black, silver, or champagne — to warm shades of brown, caramel, or two-tone. The result of the original lacquer reacting to UV exposure over decades. Tropical Datejust dials are among the most sought-after in all of vintage Rolex collecting; condition and uniformity of the patina are paramount. Every tropical dial is unique.
GD
Gilt Dial
4-digit era — 1600 / 1601 / 1603 (c.1959–1967)
Early Datejust dials with gold-printed text on a gloss black or silver surface — the "Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust" text and indices are gilded rather than applied. Gilt dials predate the matte dial era of the late 1960s. Combined with a chapter ring and acrylic crystal, the gilt-dial 1601 is the quintessential vintage Datejust collector target.
CH
Chapter Ring
Early 4-digit era (c.1959–1965)
A raised inner chapter ring surrounding the dial perimeter, carrying the minute track. Found on the earliest 4-digit Datejusts alongside gilt printing. Chapter ring dials combined with gilt text represent the earliest and most collectible Datejust dial configuration. A chapter-ring gilt dial 1601 in original unpolished condition is a top-tier vintage target.
TB
Thunderbird
Turn-O-Graph — 6309 / 16253 / 116264 (1954–2011)
The Datejust with a bidirectional rotating bezel, named after the USAF Thunderbirds aerobatic team who wore them in the 1950s. The rotating bezel predates the Submariner's unidirectional diver's bezel. Any Thunderbird reference — especially early steel-and-gold versions — is a significant collector piece. Discontinued in 2011 and never replaced.
BU
Buckley Dial
Various 5-digit refs — 16014 / 16234 / 16220 (1977–2000s)
A Datejust dial variant featuring an unusual square-edged "Buckley" hour marker configuration rather than the standard applied batons. Named informally by collectors. Found in several dial colors across the 5-digit era. The Buckley dial is a niche collector variant that commands a premium among Datejust specialists who know to look for it.
WI
Wimbledon Dial
126200 / 126234 / 126334 (current generation)
The current-generation Datejust dial with a green background and Roman numeral hour markers — reminiscent of the grass courts at Wimbledon. Introduced in 2021, the Wimbledon has become one of the most in-demand current Datejust configurations, consistently selling above retail in the secondary market. Also applied to GMT-Master and other models.
DP
Domino / Palm
Various special-order and gem-set configurations
A dial set with alternating black and white sectors or gem-set configurations. The term "Domino" describes certain two-tone dial layouts. Special-order and one-of-a-kind factory Datejust dials are a notable category — Rolex produced extraordinary custom configurations for specific markets and clients, some of which have only recently come to light in the collector community.
TT
Two-Tone / Rolesor
All eras — 1603 / 16013 / 16233 / 116203 / 126203
The steel-and-gold combination Rolex calls "Rolesor." Yellow gold and steel has been produced since the 1950s; Everose gold and steel was introduced in the 2000s. The Jubilee bracelet in two-tone is one of the most iconic bracelet configurations in watchmaking. Vintage two-tone Datejusts with matching bracelets and original dials are among the most consistent performers in the resale market.
ER
Everose Gold
Datejust 41 / Lady-Datejust — 126231 / 126281 and others
Rolex's proprietary rose gold alloy, introduced in 2005. Unlike standard 18k rose gold, Everose contains a small amount of platinum which prevents it from fading or changing color over time. Everose Datejusts — both solid and two-tone with steel — have established a strong secondary market position, particularly in the current 41mm generation.
WD
Wood & Stone Dials
5-digit and 6-digit eras — various refs
Rolex has produced Datejusts with dials made from exotic materials: wood veneers (birch, walnut, teak), stone (lapis lazuli, malachite, onyx, tiger's eye, meteorite), and coral. These factory-original exotic material dials represent some of the most extraordinary Datejust configurations ever produced and command significant premiums when verified as original.

Configuration Guide

Dials, Bezels & Bracelets

Fluted Bezel
The most recognizable Datejust configuration. Originally a functional indicator of precious metal (fluting required gold to hold its form), now Rolex's most iconic aesthetic detail. Found in yellow, white, Everose, and platinum across all eras. Gold fluted bezels on 4-digit references are particularly desirable.
Smooth Bezel
A clean, unadorned polished bezel. More understated than fluted; found across steel, two-tone, and gold references. The smooth-bezel Datejust (refs. 16200, 126200) is the most classic all-steel configuration. Vintage smooth-bezel examples in unpolished condition with original dials are a foundation of Datejust collecting.
Diamond Bezel
Factory-set brilliant-cut diamonds replacing the fluted or smooth bezel. Found on ladies', midsize, and full-size references across all metals. Rolex's "Domed Diamond" bezel and "Channel-Set Diamond" bezel are distinct configurations. Factory authenticity of diamond bezels is essential — aftermarket diamond bezels substantially reduce value.
Jubilee Bracelet
The five-link Jubilee bracelet, introduced with the original Datejust in 1945 and named for the model's Jubilee anniversary. The Jubilee's distinctive center-link pattern is one of the most recognized bracelet designs in watchmaking. Matching Jubilee bracelets on vintage references — especially complete and unpolished — contribute substantially to value.
Oyster Bracelet
The three-link Oyster bracelet on a Datejust presents a sportier aesthetic. Standard on current Datejust 41 references. Found on the Datejust II (116300) and modern 41mm pieces. The Oyster bracelet on a Datejust is a more recent pairing — vintage Datejusts are almost exclusively Jubilee. Both configurations are desirable depending on era and reference.
Engine-Turned Bezel
A crosshatch-pattern engraved bezel found on select vintage Datejust references. More complex to produce than a fluted bezel; less common. Associated with earlier 4-digit references and found in gold. An engine-turned bezel on an original-condition vintage Datejust is a notable configuration that signals deep knowledge of the reference.
Pie-Pan Dial
The earliest Datejust dials feature a raised outer chapter ring and slightly domed center — the "pie-pan" effect. This configuration, found on the earliest 4-digit references, is highly valued by collectors as an indicator of original, unrestored production. A pie-pan dial with gilt printing and chapter ring is the holy trinity of vintage Datejust dial collecting.
Stick / Applied Indices
Applied hour markers — either simple baton "sticks" or various shapes (Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, diamond-set markers) — are a key dial configuration. The type, condition, and originality of applied markers significantly affects value, particularly on vintage references where replacement or restored indices are common and dramatically reduce collector appeal.
Sigma Dial
A Datejust dial from the early 1970s bearing the sigma (σ) symbol flanking the "Swiss Made" text at the bottom, indicating that the hands and indices are made of solid gold rather than gold-plated. Found on dials produced approximately 1969–1977. The sigma marking is a detail known to serious Datejust collectors and adds modest premium on original examples.
Tapisserie / Waffle
A fine crosshatch or "tapisserie" pattern across the entire dial surface — also called "waffle" informally — found on select Datejust references. The pattern adds texture and depth. Found in champagne, silver, and other colors across both 5-digit and 6-digit eras. Particularly associated with the 16220 in steel and 16234 in white gold/steel.
Meteorite Dial
Genuine Widmanstätten-pattern iron meteorite sliced thin and used as a dial material. Each meteorite dial is entirely unique — no two are identical. Found on both Datejust 36 and 41 references across steel and precious metals. The meteorite dial represents Rolex's commitment to genuinely rare natural materials and commands a premium over standard configurations.
Roman Numeral Dial
A Datejust dial with Roman numeral hour markers rather than the standard applied baton indices. Found across multiple dial colors and metals. The Wimbledon dial (green, Roman numerals) is the current generation's most sought-after Roman numeral configuration. Vintage Roman numeral Datejusts in two-tone or gold are classic collector targets.

The Glenn Bradford Difference

Nearly Four Decades & Passionate Datejust Collectors

Glenn Bradford Fine Jewelry has been a trusted name in fine jewelry and watches for nearly 40 years, with deep roots in both the Hamptons and New York. Across that time we have built expertise across the full spectrum of fine watchmaking — Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and beyond — bringing the perspective of a serious collector rather than a generalist dealer to every evaluation.

The Datejust is not simply a watch we trade — it is a collection we have lived in for four decades. We understand what separates a chapter-ring gilt-dial 1601 from a later matte-dial example, why a tropical dial is transformative rather than merely cosmetic, what the sigma marking signifies and why it matters, and how to assess a two-tone reference with its original matching Jubilee bracelet versus a replaced one. We know the Turn-O-Graph's history before the Submariner's first bezel rotated. Every generation, every bezel variant, every dial configuration — understood and priced accordingly.

We also know how to read patina on a vintage Datejust dial — and we value it exactly as a serious collector would. A tropical dial that has shifted from black to warm caramel or chocolate is not a damaged watch. It is an irreproducible record of time and exposure — and among the most sought-after dial conditions in all of vintage Rolex collecting. We never discount original patina. A uniform, beautifully aged tropical dial on an unpolished 1601 with chapter ring and gilt printing is, to us, a document of history. We price it that way.

How It Works

A Simple, Discreet Process

01
Submit Your Watch

Use the form above or contact us directly. For vintage references — especially gilt-dial, chapter-ring, or tropical examples — clear photos of the dial, case, bracelet, and caseback are very helpful. For gem-set or exotic-dial references, natural light photographs showing the dial surface are essential.

02

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — and often significantly, and sometimes in ways sellers don't expect. Original dial condition is the single most important factor on a vintage Datejust. A tropical dial — where the original lacquer has aged to brown, caramel, or a two-tone combination — can multiply a watch's value by several times compared to the same reference with a standard black or silver dial. We assess vintage Datejust dials as collectors: original, aged, and unrestored is preferred. What reduces value is a replaced dial, restored printing, or redone lume. If your watch shows signs of age on the dial, describe it honestly — it may be exactly what we are looking for.
