Few combinations in modern watchmaking carry as much instant recognition as a Rolex Daytona in yellow gold with a green dial. The reference 126508 continues that story with a fresh interpretation, pairing a bright green sunray dial with golden chronograph counters in a 40 mm case of solid 18-carat yellow gold. Collectors quickly nicknamed it the "John Mayer 2.0," a nod to the earlier green-dial Daytona that made the color famous. This 2026 example captures everything that has made the Cosmograph Daytona the most coveted chronograph in the world, presented in one of its most vibrant forms.
The Daytona's story begins in 1963, when Rolex introduced the Cosmograph, a chronograph designed for racing drivers with a tachymetric scale on the bezel for measuring average speed. Its name soon became tied to Daytona Beach in Florida and its long history of motor racing, and over the decades the watch became a symbol of performance and prestige. In 2000, Rolex equipped the Daytona with its first in-house chronograph movement, Calibre 4130, and in 2016 the yellow gold reference 116508 appeared with a green dial and matching green counters. The musician John Mayer famously championed that watch, and the "John Mayer" nickname has followed green-dial gold Daytonas ever since. In 2023, marking the model's 60th anniversary, Rolex introduced the current generation of the Daytona with refined case lines and a new movement. In 2025 the green dial returned to the 126508 in a new configuration with golden counters, and it was immediately dubbed the "John Mayer 2.0."
The dial is what sets this reference apart. Its main surface is finished in a bright green sunray that shifts from emerald to a lighter, almost lime tone as the light moves across it, while the three chronograph counters are spray-coated in a golden finish that echoes the yellow gold case. The contrast between green and gold gives the dial a warm, two-tone character that recalls some of the most celebrated vintage Daytona designs, while remaining distinctly modern. The hour markers are 18-carat gold appliques filled with Chromalight, Rolex's luminescent material that glows blue in the dark and keeps its glow for a long time. The gold hour and minute hands carry luminescent inserts as well, and the word Daytona appears in red above the six o'clock counter, a small detail that has been a signature of the model for decades.
The chronograph layout follows the classic Daytona arrangement. The central seconds hand times events to the fraction of a second, the counter at three o'clock records up to 30 minutes, and the counter at nine o'clock records up to 12 hours, while the subdial at six o'clock shows the running seconds. The chronograph is started and stopped by the screw-down pusher at two o'clock and reset by the pusher at four o'clock, both of which screw down to the case to protect water resistance when they are not in use. Surrounding the dial, the fixed bezel is crafted from 18-carat yellow gold and engraved with a tachymetric scale reading up to 400 units per hour, allowing the wearer to measure average speed over a known distance, just as the original Cosmograph was designed to do.
Inside is Calibre 4131, a self-winding mechanical chronograph movement developed and manufactured entirely by Rolex. Introduced with the 2023 generation of the Daytona, it is an evolution of the celebrated Calibre 4130 and incorporates several of the manufacture's latest innovations. These include the Chronergy escapement, designed to improve energy efficiency, along with Paraflex shock absorbers and the paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, which resists magnetic fields and temperature variations and is far more resistant to shocks than a traditional hairspring. The movement winds in both directions through its Perpetual rotor and offers a power reserve of approximately 72 hours, enough to keep running through a full weekend off the wrist. Its bridges are decorated with Rolex's own interpretation of Côtes de Genève, a refinement introduced with this calibre.
Like every Rolex, the Daytona carries the Superlative Chronometer certification. Each movement is first certified by the official Swiss chronometer testing institute, then tested again by Rolex after it has been cased, to a standard of minus two to plus two seconds per day. That precision is measured on the finished watch, not just the bare movement, and it is one of the strictest standards in the industry. The Superlative Chronometer certification also covers water resistance, self-winding, and power reserve.
The Oyster case measures 40 mm in diameter and is crafted from 18-carat yellow gold, an alloy that Rolex produces in its own foundry. The middle case is formed from a solid block of gold, while the case back and the winding crown screw down tightly, and the crown is equipped with the Triplock triple waterproofness system. Together they give the watch water resistance to 100 meters, an impressive figure for a chronograph. The 2023 redesign refined the case lines and gave the lugs a slimmer, more elegant profile, and the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial.
The Oyster bracelet completes the watch. Made from three-piece solid links in 18-carat yellow gold, it alternates polished and satin finishes and closes with the folding Oysterlock safety clasp, which prevents accidental opening. The Easylink comfort extension link allows the bracelet to be lengthened by about 5 mm, a practical detail on warmer days. The result is a watch that feels substantial and luxurious on the wrist, yet remains comfortable enough to wear every day.
What makes the Daytona 126508 "John Mayer 2.0" so compelling is the way it combines Rolex's most celebrated chronograph with one of its most expressive color schemes. It offers a modern in-house movement, Superlative Chronometer precision, and the robust Oyster case, all presented in solid gold with a green and gold dial that is impossible to mistake. For collectors who appreciate both the heritage of the Daytona and the confidence of a bold design, this reference stands as one of the most desirable expressions of the model today.
