First introduced in 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph was created for the racing enthusiast and was later named "Cosmograph Daytona" or simply the "Daytona" after the famed racing event. The most iconic Daytona and the most coveted and famous watch in the world, is the "Newman dial Daytona." Rolex approached their dial manufacturer Singer asking for an exotic dial unlike any ever created and they created a dial of two piece construction with lowered border with red chapter ring, square hour markers just outside the round lumes. The panda sub-dials feature Art Deco Arabic Numerals in the sub dials, square hour markers and was written "Daytona" in Red. Years later, he Italian watch community and press touted it as the "Newman Dial" after the famed movie star, car racing driver, entrepreneur + philanthropist, Paul Newman was captured in the press wearing this special Daytona. In 2017, Newman's personal Daytona sold for over $17.75 million at auction. Given to him by his wife Joanne Woodward with the inscription "Drive Safely".
