Everything You Need to Know About the Rolex Daytona

Initially designed for racing professionals in the 1960s, the Daytona is one of Rolex's most coveted timepieces. Specifically, the "Newman Dial Daytona" is recognized as the most iconic Daytona and the most famous watch in the world. The Fusion of Luxury and Pop Culture

Jay-Z was recently spotted in his latest watch, a Rolex Daytona 6263. Anticipate a rise in demand and prices as the "Jay-Z Effect" once again leaves its mark on the luxury watch market. Just as his acquisition of a Cartier Crash Watch caused a surge, his choice of Rolex Daytona with a rare Newman Dial is predicted to do the same.

A Commemorative Edition

In other Rolex news, the brand is releasing a special version of the Daytona to honor the 100th running of the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans race. With a reverse panda dial and a special black ceramic scale bezel that features the "100" indication in red, this new white gold model has a movement that can measure the famed 24-hour endurance race.

This unreleased Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 126529LN features a Newman-inspired Dial that will sell above list price. Although highly original, this watch incorporates some "exotic" elements of the Paul Newman Dial into the sundial, which will impact the price of all Newman Dial Daytonas.

Astronomical Levels of Value and Collectability

When Paul Newman took up automobile racing in the late 1960s, his wife Joanne Woodward gave him this ref 6239 Newman Daytona, which was replaced in 1970 by ref 6262.

In 2017, Paul Newman's personal Newman Daytona was sold for a whopping $17.8 million. Needless to say, these dials are extremely rare and valuable.

Glenn Wearing His Personal Newman Daytona

Glenn owns three, has transacted nine, knows of 14 others that belong to clients and has proven five to be bogus since December.

Beware of Fake Daytonas

A client once told Glenn, "you are buying your dealer as much as you are a watch." As an expert in this field, Glenn has personally handled a number of fakes, which are completely worthless.

If you go to Rolex to authenticate your watch, you will have to pay thousands of dollars and wait a couple of years to get an answer. One of Glenn's clients purchased the above fake Rolex Newman 25 years ago for $25k. He first brought it to Rolex, and although the brand said the dial was fake, they did not open the watch up for further investigation. Instead of shipping his watch to Geneva Rolex for $3900, he visited Glenn at his Southampton flagship.

Upon careful observation, Glenn noticed that the movement and dial are not Rolex components. He also believes the case itself is not authentic. The movement bridge and updated Rolex bracelet are the only real parts of this worthless knockoff.
